In a recent piece for The Huffington Post, 海角社区 President George J. Hagerty reviews fifty years of education policy that has attempted to create a level playing field for students with a variety of disabilities – including learning disabilities. Looking at the growing popularity of outcome assessments, Dr. Hagerty questions the value of standardized testing as a measurement for students who learn differently. He concludes: “In an accountable world, there is a common understanding of the need for statewide testing. But such evaluations and assessments have never been particularly friendly turf for students with special needs and their parents.”

海角社区 GraduationAccording to an article on diverseeducation.com, 海角社区鈥檚 success rate with students who learn differently (those with diagnosed learning disabilities, dyslexia, ADHD, etc.) is nothing short of extraordinary. The article speaks to students about their experiences prior to entering college, at other undergraduate institutions and at 海角社区. It then reviews some of the key issues in educating students who learn differently, noting 海角社区鈥檚 terrific graduation and placement rate, and explores why 海角社区 is different. Dr. Hagerty frames it as an ethical issue, 鈥渋f you admit a student, you should expect that the student can master the coursework and can graduate.鈥 That鈥檚 海角社区鈥檚 commitment to our students.

Daniel Bordenkircher, 海角社区 Class of 2015 Human Services & Psychology graduate and class salutatorian, traveled a unique path to academic success. Dan has been a resident of Leesburg for more than 30 years and, while he was aware of 海角社区’s mission, he never considered it an option for his own college education, until he was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, finally giving an explanation for his previous academic struggles and helping him to realize the right academic fit for him.

At 海角社区, Dan not only excelled academically, he also found a new and more rewarding career path and became a valued member of the staff with positions in both the Writing Center and the Center for Student Success. Beginning with the fall 2015 semester, Dan will become a full-time Learning Specialist, using his experiences and education to mentor students and help them achieve the sort of success he has himself enjoyed.

Dan’s inspiring story was profiled on the Learning Advisor blog. The article may be read .

According to Dr. George J. Hagerty, “There is a significant distance for most students and families between the promise of American special education and the reality of our outcomes.” Dr. Hagerty presents this viewpoint in “,” a blog feature on bostonparentspaper.com. In the piece, Dr. Hagerty discusses the continued importance of parents as advocates throughout the educational process for students who learn differently. One area where such parents can really make a difference is in helping their students identify institutions that have moved beyond lowered expectations and mere accommodation and actually have a track record of helping students who learn differently succeed.

How did you overcome this hurdle?

Jack: I used the help of my learning specialist and assistive technology to help me overcome my writing difficulties.

Heather: My learning specialist helped me become better organized to be more aware of deadlines, but it was also helpful to have faculty support and understanding.

Michael: My learning specialist has helped me become better organized.

What are you most excited to share with attendees at the ADDA conference?

Jack: How 海角社区 helped introduce me to the available strategies to help me succeed academically.

Heather: My college experiences and accomplishments.

Michael: The fact that it’s possible for people with ADHD to be successful in a college environment.

What activities on campus helped you channel your ADHD?

Jack: I was able to become involved in art classes. A performance piece I created was accepted for an exhibition in Orlando, and it also won Best of Show in 海角社区’s first ever juried student art show. I also was president of the College fraternity, co-creator of Activities Club, and an Orientation Leader. I really liked being able to just help out around the college, though. I would work with Ray, who is in charge of maintenance, and I also worked with Admissions, which I continue to do now as an intern.

Read more about Jack Callahan here.

Heather: I definitely think it helped with my creativity. This past year, I won a campus contest that required using a creative concept to illustrate our new College motto. And I liked being part of different groups around campus. For instance, I was part of the Camping Club. But I also liked just being able to help and my position as an RA. It always felt good to help out.

Michael: My position in Admissions as a Student Ambassador has helped me. I also like to participate in different activities and events that the College sponsors.
