Continuing its award-winning run, 海角社区鈥檚 monthly PBS show 鈥溾 in January scored gold (and silver) in the 3rd Annual .

Now in its fourth season, and the second broadcast on and streaming nationally via the PBS app, the 海角社区-produced program was a gold Anthem winner for best strategy for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Awareness and Media categories. 鈥淎 World of Difference: Embracing Neurodiversity鈥 also picked up a Silver Anthem Winner for news and journalism for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Awareness and Media categories.

The show previously earned a Bronze Anthem Award in the competition鈥檚 inaugural year.

鈥淭his recognition is a testament to 海角社区鈥檚 steadfast mission to support, educate, and celebrate families that are walking the neurodiverse path,鈥 said Darryl E. Owens, associate vice president of communications and engagement at 海角社区, and the show鈥檚 creator, producer, and host. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also a well-earned acknowledgment of the creativity, dedication, devotion, and sacrifice the ‘A World of Difference’ team pours into every episode.鈥

That team now consists of freelance correspondents across the country and the pond, including Cindy Peterson, Brad Kuhn, Dave DeJohn, Luisa Ardila, Bassey Arikpo, Ryan Peterson, United Kingdom-based videographer Elijah Grant, and HealthDay special correspondent Mabel Jong, with production support from NG Production Films in Altamonte Springs, Florida, and promotional support Mary Wymer, digital communications manager at 海角社区, and Curley & Pynn Public Relations Management in Orlando, Florida.

Launched in 2021 by The Webby Awards, The Anthem Awards honors the purpose and mission-driven work of people, companies, and organizations worldwide. By amplifying the voices that spark global change, the competition strives to define a new benchmark for impactful work that inspires others to act in their communities.

The Anthem Awards honors work across seven core causes: Diversity; Equity and Inclusion; Education; Art and Culture; Health; Human and Civil Rights; Humanitarian Action and Services; Responsible Technology; and Sustainability, Environment and Climate.

The competition was founded in partnership with the Ad Council, Born This Way Foundation, Feeding America, GLAAD, Mozilla, NAACP, NRDC, WWF, and XQ.

This year鈥檚 Anthem Award winners were selected from more than 2,000 submissions from 44 countries by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). Anthem judges are intellectually diverse leaders from across the impact industry with expertise that spans across the Anthem cause areas.

鈥淭he Anthem Awards were born out of the desire to amplify and celebrate the voices that are creating sustainable change and to inspire others to take action,鈥 said Patricia McLoughlin, Anthem Awards general manager. 鈥淚n a year where so much is at stake, it is incredibly important to recognize impact work and celebrate the progress happening globally.鈥

After an award-winning inaugural season on public access TV, what could 海角社区鈥檚 neurodiversity television show 鈥淎 World of Difference鈥 do in season two for an encore?

How about leveling up to cable and vying for a PBS stamp of approval?

In its second season, “A World of Difference,” the monthly program that examines neurodiversity issues related to learning differences, jumped from Lakefront TV to SuperChannel WACX-DT55.1. Lakefront TV is a Leesburg public, educational, and governmental (PEG) channel. SuperChannel is a full-power commercial broadcast television station reaching more than 1 million Florida cable subscribers.

AWOD on WUCF

“When the opportunity presented itself, we realized moving to cable would further our objective of sharing with a wider audience 海角社区鈥檚 expertise in the learning differences space,” said Darryl E. Owens, 海角社区 communications director and creator/host of “A World of Difference.”

The move, Owens added, also, 鈥渁dvances our goal of educating, supporting, and celebrating neurodiverse families with informational, inspirational, and aspirational content.鈥

Season two kicked off with an in-depth interview with “The People鈥檚 Shark,” Daymond John, CEO of FUBU and star of ABC鈥檚 “Shark Tank.” He discussed being an uber-successful entrepreneur and living with dyslexia. “A World of Difference” airs Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. on WACX.

Meanwhile, on Oct. 19, WUCF-TV, a PBS member television station managed by the University of Central Florida, gave “A World of Difference” its first PBS test drive.

The special, “Ensuring Workforce Diversity Includes Neurodiversity” 鈥 a season one episode 鈥 was aired in honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. One in five U.S. children has a learning or attention issue such as ADHD or dyslexia and an estimated 85% of college graduates affected by autism are unemployed.

The show supports and celebrates their journeys to independence from kindergarten to college using compelling storytelling, conversations with experts, viewer Q&As and interviews with successful individuals with learning differences of their own. The program has earned multiple awards, including PR News鈥 CSR Diversity Award.

“A World of Difference” has featured successful people with learning differences including John, retired Stanley Cup champion Brent Sopel, and Dr. Temple Grandin, a world-renowned scientist and autism activist.

Episodes also are available at AWODTV.org

The 海角社区 Office of College Communications in August continued its run of racking up industry awards by winning three accolades in two public relations contests.

海角社区 President George J. Hagerty and communications director Darryl E. Owens took home an Award of Distinction from the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) during its 82nd Annual Conference at the “Goldchella” Golden Image Awards Gala at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando.

The award, in the Collateral of Public Relations, Brochures, category recognized the duo鈥檚 work on the college鈥檚 2020 EASE Grant Booklet. The advocacy publication was created to reinforce the consequential role Florida鈥檚 EASE tuition-assistance program plays in helping students afford to attend Florida鈥檚 private colleges, including 海角社区. Entries that 鈥渕eet the standards of excellence set by a panel of judges鈥 earn the Award of Distinction, according to the FPRA website.

Tactics - Radiance Award - 海角社区Later in the month, 海角社区 collected two more awards in the statewide Radiance Awards. The contest, administered by PRSA Sunshine District, recognizes outstanding strategic public relations programs and the highest levels of professional achievement by Florida practitioners and organizations.

During the virtual event, the 海角社区 comms team received an Award of Distinction in the Videos category for 鈥淎 World of Difference.鈥 The monthly TV program debuted in August 2020 and celebrates and supports families rearing children who learn differently on their journeys to independence from kindergarten through college.

Meanwhile, the 2020 EASE Grant booklet proved the big winner in the Collateral category, earning a Radiance Award.

Owens called the awards validation that 海角社区鈥檚 messaging is gaining traction beyond 海角社区鈥檚 walls.

鈥淲hile the recognition from communications colleagues is gratifying, even more rewarding is that the awards are proof that the innovative ways our small college uses to communicate our message of value and expertise are breaking through,鈥 he said.

In a conversation with Hunter, the retired senior pastor of Northland, A Church Distributed, a multi-campus church in Central Florida, and the former spiritual advisor to President Barack Obama, Stauffer, a business and technology major, recounted his pre-college days at Pace Brantley School. The Longwood, Fla. private school educates students with ADHD, Asperger syndrome and other learning differences and collaborates with 海角社区 on special programs.

That conversation dovetailed nicely into Stauffer鈥檚 perspectives on the continuing linkage and need for collegiate education designed for those who learn differently to continue the education journey begun earlier at places like Pace Brantley.
