Job Description
The Humanities Teaching Assistant (TA) supports a faculty member in delivering an engaging, organized, and inclusive learning environment. This role supports the student
learning experience by reinforcing course concepts, facilitating peer engagement, and assisting with instructional and administrative tasks. TAs work under the mentorship of a faculty member and are expected to model professionalism, reliability, and academic integrity. This position provides an opportunity to strengthen communication, leadership, and organizational skills while gaining hands-on experience in academic support and instruction.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional and Classroom Support
- Attend all scheduled class sessions and actively support course delivery
- Assist with classroom setup, materials distribution, and learning activities
- Facilitate small group discussions, tutorials, or review sessions as directed by the instructor
- Provide peer-level academic support by helping students better understand course concepts
Student Support and Engagement
- Hold consistent weekly office hours to support students with coursework, assignments, and projects
- Offer guidance on assignments while reinforcing faculty expectations (not completing work for students)
- Foster a welcoming and supportive environment for peer learning
Administrative and Course Management
- Take and maintain accurate attendance records
- Assist with organizing and maintaining course materials and documentation
- Support the preparation of answer keys, study guides, or supplemental notes as directed
- Upload or update course materials and announcements in Canvas
- Assist with copying, distributing, and organizing readings and resources
Work Expectations and Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain consistent attendance for all assigned class sessions, office hours, and scheduled responsibilities
- Communicate proactively with the supervising instructor regarding scheduling conflicts or concerns
- If unable to attend a scheduled session or office hour:
- Notify both the instructor and students as soon as possible
- Post an announcement (when appropriate) and/or a physical notice
- Coordinate with the instructor to reschedule missed time when feasible
- Arrive prepared for all responsibilities, including office hours and discussion sessions
- Uphold confidentiality, professionalism, and academic integrity at all times
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong organizational and time management skills (executive functioning)
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to interact professionally and supportively with peers
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks
- Reliability and accountability in a structured academic setting
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful completion of the course (or a related course) with demonstrated proficiency
- Ability to balance multiple responsibilities and adapt to changing needs
- Interest in teaching, mentoring, or academic support roles
