Job Description
The ENG 1040 Teaching Assistant (TA) will support an undergraduate reading and composition course that provides opportunities for students to strengthen their skills in these areas. The TA should be familiar with school-provided programs such as Microsoft Suite, how to use the library database, MLA citations, and have completed ENG 1101 and ENG 1102 with no less than a B average. The TA will support both students and the instructor in and out of class. The TA will be required to attend class sessions, hold office hours each week, and attend trainings one or more times per month.
Position Overview
Two TAs are needed to work during and host office hours outside of ENG 1040 From Page to Practice. Each student will work 5-6 hours per week and must be available during class as well as outside of class to host office hours as well as attend trainings one or more times per month.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Complete all tasks with a high level of professionalism.
- Briefly review course materials and assignment direction before classes each week.
- Foster a positive learning environment through supportive rapport building.
- Assist instructor with providing support to students in and out of class through explanation of assignments, breaking assignments into smaller steps, and constructive feedback.
- Help manage course materials and announcements on Canvas, if requested by instructor.
- Ability to attend any required trainings with reasonable advance notice.
- Other reasonable duties as assigned.

- Must have completed ENG 1101 and ENG 1102 with no less than a B average
- Must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher; semester GPA of 2.0 or higher
- Must follow the student code of conduct and have no major infractions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in teaching, humanities, or English Composition preferred
- Experience with peer mentoring, tutoring, or similar experience.
- Comfortable assisting in facilitation of group interactions when students are not communicating effectively during group work.
- Sophomore level or higher preferred (30 credits or more)
